Syria-Brunei, Politics, 9/17/2002

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad on Monday evening received the Sultan of Brunei Hassan al-Balqia, the Sultan of Brunei Dar al-Salaam and held with him two meetings, One was a close door bilateral meeting during which the two sides reviewed the situation in the region concerning all its aspects, the situation in the ME peace process as bilateral relations and means of strengthening them.

During these talks, the two sides expressed their hope that Sultan Balqia's visit to Syria will contribute to expanding cooperation relations between the two countries in various political, economic, social and economic fields.

In his speech President al-Assad with the Sultan, al-Assad said that the peoples of the world are in need of peace and economic development, rather than the "drums of war," adding " we want peace and work for that peace to prevail the world areas." The President said "if we look into the situation in our region we, every day, hear and sea threats of wars instead of working for peace and that Israel responded to the Arab peace initiative by more threats and acts of killing and destruction."

The president explained that the consequences of the situation in our region are embodied first in the aggression against the Palestinian people and also embodied in the continued threat to launch a war against Iraq, noting that the case of Iraq requires resorting to logic and wisdom instead of beating the drums of war.

President al-Assad and Sultan Hassan al-Balqia reviewed the situation in the region and the condition and bilateral relations and means of strengthening them.
