Cairo ruling party reelects Mubarak as a President
Egypt, Politics, 9/16/2002
The ruling Democratic National Party in Egypt on Sunday started its 8th conference, the first since 1992, amid the decrease in the expectations of alienating the "old guard," with and rising of popularity of Jamal Hosni Mubarak ( son of President Mubarak).
Upon the beginning of the conference which was held at Cairo's sport Stadium, the party re-elected President Mubarak as its president. After the party's assistant secretary general and minister of the people's affairs Kamal al-Shazli announced in his speech that he nominates "Mr. President as a chairman for the party and those who accept the nomination raise your hand," the participants, estimated at 6000 members, stood up and applauded.
Mubarak delivered a speech before the conference which is being held under the slogan "a new thinking for modernizing Egypt in which he said that "the requirements of the current phase needed proposing new formations for the party's basic principles. He said " there are still before us a long road of difficult work to implement what we will agree upon in this conference with the beginning of a new phase of our attempt to maintain political reforms." Mubarak's statements were considered as directed at the "old guard" who consider the young generation as a threat to it.
After President Mubarak concluded his speech, the participants started close- door deliberations on the party's strategy for the future and its work charter. During the conference's three day deliberation, a new leadership will be formed for the first time since its foundation in 1978.
There are expectations that Jamal ( 39 year old), the son of the Egyptian President will assume the post of the party's secretary general or the post of a new committee with the task of drawing policies for the party. These expectations are reinforces by that Mubarak is paving the way before his son to assume the post of the presidency despite the fact President Mubarak denied that repeatedly.
Most of its history, of 24 year old, the national party has been ruled by the old guards which includes the minister of agriculture and the deputy prime minister Youssef wali in his capacity as a secretary general for the party and the two ministers for the people's assembly and Shoura Kamal al-Shazli, and the information minister Safwat al-Sharif in their being as the party's two assistant secretaries.
Jamal Mubark led Sunday's session for two hours aimed at modernizing the national party. He said during the meeting:" we have achieved a lost.. we changed the concepts and systems which govern the party's work. Jamal Mubarak called for a better relations between the government and members of the party at the parliament and to the meetings of committees at the grass-root level and the increase of woman participation.N.
