Mubarak calls on Iraq 'to use' the opportunity

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak welcomed the "door opened by" the US President George Bush to solve the Iraqi case in his concentration on the central role played by the UN, calling on the Iraqi leadership "to implement UN Security Council resolutions."

In statements broadcast by the Egyptian Middle East News Agency MENA, the Mubarak expressed his welcome of the door "opened by the US President to solve the Iraqi question, by asserting the key role the UN should play especially the UN Security Council concerning Iraq." Mubarak called on the Iraqi leadership to USA "the opportunity and implement UN Security Council resolutions concerned, and accept the return back of UN inspectors immediately, so as to avoid the escalation of conditions and avoid the grave consequences which will have their negative reflections on the security and safety of the Iraqi people and on the Middle East region as a whole."

Mubarak also expressed his welcome of the speech made by President Bush on Thursday towards "his country's commitment to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state." Mubarak said "I have listened attentively to Bush's speech before the UN general assembly and I would like to welcome the positive points stated in it." On the other hand, the Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Maher said that Egypt will not support strikes against Iraq unless the UN decides so.

Meantime, the Egyptian daily al-Akhbar quoted Jordanian sources as saying that the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, President Bashar al-Assad of Syria, the Jordanian king Abdullah II and the Saudi crown prince Abdullah will hold a summit meeting in order to discuss a joint strategy in retaliation to Washington threat to attacking Iraq.
