Morocco, Politics, 9/13/2002
Since it gained its independence in 1956, Morocco has held a total of six legislative elections, the latest of which are the 1997 polls which led to the emergence of a socialist-led coalition government in what is called "consensus alternation."
The legislative elections slated for this September 27 are the first ones under the reign of King Mohammed VI who was enthroned in July 1999 after the passing away of his father, the late King Hassan II.
Here follows the date of the previous legislative elections:
1963: 73% of electors voted a bi-cameral parliament: 144 members of the House of representatives elected at the direct universal suffrage for a four-year mandate and 120 member of the chamber of advisors were elected at the indirect universal suffrage for a 6-year mandate. Half of the higher chamber were renewed every three years.
1970: Following a constitution amendment, voters chose a uni-cameral parliament of 240 members, including 90 who were elected at the direct universal suffrage and 150 by communal councilors and professional chambers.
1977: More than 5 million Moroccans voted for 264 members of the house of representatives: including two thirds at the direct universal suffrage and one third at the indirect universal suffrage. The parliament's mandate was then extended by two years.
1984: Another mono-cameral parliament of 306 members was elected. Two thirds were chosen through the direct universal suffrage and one third at the indirect universal suffrage for a six-year mandate which was extended by two years.
1993: a 333-house of representatives was elected, including two thirds directly by voters and one third by local councilors, professional chambers and representatives off wage-earners.
1997: Morocco resumed the bi-cameral system which was approved by referendum. Turnout rate stood at 58.3%.
