Swedish politician of Lebanese origin facing imprisonment over aiding the people's front
Lebanon-Sweden, Local, 9/13/2002

A Swedish attorney general has opened an investigation against the chairman of the Leftist party youth federation ( the former communist Party) Ali Sbeiti, of the Lebanese origin under the charge of giving donation in a sum allocated in a Lebanese account run by the People's Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

Sbeiti is suspected to "violate the law on financing terrorism" which is enforced in Sweden since July this year, with a penalty of two to 6 year imprisonment.

One of the attorney in the international accusation chamber in Stockholm summoned Sbeiti and another member in the party's central committee to inquire them before the police next week.

Sbeiti allotted a sum estimated at thousands of Swedish Cronos in the accounts of Lubnan WalMahjar ( Lebanon and the expatriate ) bank in Beirut. His party offered 1000 Corons ( 110 EUROS) of the said sum.

Sbeiti stressed that these sums will be used by non- governmental organizations active in the Palestinian camps for refugees in Lebanon.

He said "we, of course knew that this account is used by the People's Front for the Liberation of Palestine."

Sbeiti's party sees in the European blacklist concerning terrorism as a stand which supports "several regimes which terrify peoples, and in particular a support for the Israeli occupation of Palestine."
