Poll finds majority of Moroccans will turn out at legislative elections
Morocco, Politics, 9/10/2002

An opinion poll conducted by "CSA TMO Maroc" found that 78% of those polled were ready to show up this September 27 to cast their vote at the legislative elections.

The poll, ordered by "Maroc 2020" association, also found that 9% will not be voting and 13% have not made a decision yet.

The poll covered a sample of 1,201 persons chosen among those registered.

A previous poll conducted in September 2001 said 57% were intending to vote against 66% who said they will vote in a poll conducted last April. The two previous polls concerned all persons who had reached the voting age.

Out of 22% who said they will not vote or have not made up their mind yet, 44% said they wish candidates will be competent and honest and 31% want elections to bring about a government able to face Morocco's real problems.

A rate of 29% of the polled persons want guarantees that the authorities will not be interfering in elections and in results while another 27% want guarantees that corruption will not be used.

The poll also reveals that 73% have not yet decided for party or candidate they will vote for, and 25% have made up their mind. Another 24% said they will vote for the same party or candidate as the previous elections.

A group of 53% think that elections will be honest.

On women candidates' chances, 34% of those polled wish that women and men will have equal chances, 24% propose a 1/10 parliamentary seats for women and four out of five said they are not against women's participation.
