Ten Islamists are tried in Amman
Jordan, Politics, 9/10/2002
A Jordanian legal source said that ten Islamists, accused of planning attacks against Americans residents in Jordan and against Israelis via the Jordanian borders, denied accusations addressed to them upon the beginning of their trial on Monday before the state security court in Amman.
The accusation list said that the main person convicted in this case, Wael Yasser al-Shalabi, proposed to three of his friends upon his return back from Afghanistan in February this year, to prepare for an attack by weapons against a group of Americans, residents in Jordan, in Abdoun quarters to the west of Amman.
But the Jordanian intelligence arrested him in March before he was able to buy the weapons. A matter which pushed the other three partners to change their plans, and instead to prepare for attacks against Israeli targets through the Jordanian borders. This was made by the help of other three persons and those 6 made contacts with other 3 in order to get the weapons. But all of them were arrested before carrying out their plans, according to the list of accusations.
The attorney general of the state security court accused 8 out of ten persons, with the majority of them Jordanians of a Palestinian origin, " of conspiring with the aim of carrying out terrorist acts." He also accused them of "owning" or "selling" automatic weapons including three Klashinkove machine guns ( AK 47) to use them illegally. Each and every accusation has a maximum sentence of death penalty.
