Jordan asked the Arab participation in the quartet committee
Jordan-Regional, Politics, 9/9/2002

The Jordanian foreign minister Marwan al-Maasher on Sunday said that his country asked for expanding the size of the Arab participation during the next meeting with the Quartet committee in New York, so as to include the Arab follow up committee

In statements to the Jordanian News agency Petra and to the Jordanian TV, al-Maasher explained that he had asked the Quartet committee to expand the base of the Arab participation in its meeting due to be held on September in New York by including the Arab initiative committee. He added " we asked for the participation not to be limited to the three Arab foreign ministers of "Jordan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia" which meet with the Quartet committee and we are waiting for the reply so far from the Quartet committee," which includes the US, Russia, the European Union and the UN.

The committee in charge of the Arab peace initiative approved by the Beirut's Arab summit by the end of March, the foreign ministers of each of Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Morocco, Bahrain, the Palestinian Authority as well as Jordan, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Al-Maasher and his Egyptian counterpart Ahmad Maher and a representative for the Saudi foreign ministry Saud al-Faisal took part in a first meeting with the Quartet committee in the mid of last September in New York.

Replying to a question on a statement made by the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon in which he announced the abrogation of the agreements signed with the Palestinians, al-Maasher said "Arab consultations with the international sides indicate that these sides want to crystallize a work plan to establish the Palestinian state by the fall of 2005 despite the rejection of the Israeli government." He added that Jordan experts efforts to this end, regardless to the position of the Israeli government.
