Indian Congress flays US Attack on Iraq
Iraq-India, Politics, 9/7/2002
The Indian Congress Friday deplored U.S. attack on Iraq saying the unilateral action was in total contravention of the International law and Conventions, reported the Indian news agency PTI.
"We deplore the unprovoked attack by US on a Non-Aligned Country like Iraq. It is in total contravention of the International Law and International Convention," Party spokesman S Jaipal Reddy told reporters. He said the party was of the view that this approach would not lead to amicable settlement of the problem between Iraq and the United States. "We also note with regret that United Nations has been bypassed in this process," he said. In the biggest ever single operation in the last four years, more than 100 US and British aircraft Thursday launched an attack on a major Iraqi air defense installation.
PTI also reported that Iraq reacted angrily to US air raids and said it would raise at the upcoming UN General Assembly session the issue whether America has the "divine" right to attack any country in contravention of UN charter and international law. "What kind of hostile act is this. They are flying over our cities and our country. We are not attacking American jet fighters flying over New York and Washington. We are firing on airplanes violating our sovereignty," Iraqi Ambassador to India Salah Al Mukhtar told a televison news channel in Mumbai when asked about the latest US raids on Iraq. He said "it is an aggression over the Iraqi territory." Britain confirmed that US and British war planes struck an Iraqi air base but did not corroborate reports that some 100 fighter jets participated in the action Thursday, PTI said.
