Maneuvers end in Jordan, Americans leave within days

The Jordanian Minister of Information Muhammad al-Edwan announced yesterday that the American forces which took part in the maneuvers with the Jordanian forces since three weeks started to leave the Jordanian territories as from Thursday after the end of the maneuvers, which were strongly criticized by the 14 Jordanian opposition parties, with the majority of them are from the Islamic movements, because of the US threats against Iraq and the talk on the possibility of using American bases in Jordan to attack Iraq.

Al-Edwan said that the American forces will leave the Jordanian territories by September 9th or next Monday.

The American embassy in Amman and the Jordanian government did not give explanations on the number of the US forces which took part in the training, or the volume and kind of weapons used during them.

Various sources spoke about the participation of 1500 American troops in the maneuvers which the press was not allowed to cover.

The Jordanian minister reiterated that these maneuvers came in the framework of joint exercises between the Jordanian and American armies and "has no links to Iraq." Jordanian military officials stressed that the decision to have the maneuvers was taken a long time ago and they are part of joint training carried once a year since ten years.

American- Jordanian maneuvers were carried out in March this year and they were not declared then.
