Jordan: releasing an accused man in a Fraud case
Jordan, Economics, 9/6/2002

A Jordanian judicial source said that the state security court in Jordan decided to release Ayman al-Shamaeylah, the main accused person in the 100 million dollar banks fraud case.

The source explained that the release decision came at a guarantee of 30,000 Jordanian dinars (42,000 dollars) for Ayman al- Shamaeylah, the younger brother and assistant of the main accused, and fleeing man Majd al-Shamaeleh and was taken on Monday.

The Jordanian daily al-Doustour said on Thursday that Ayman al-Shamaeylah family took the measures to release him including the required guarantee on Wednesday.

The Russian authorities arrested Ayman al-Shamaeylah in Moscow and handed him to Jordan on June 10th. The fraud case is connected to Majd al-Shmaeylah getting with the help of partners and through falsifying official documents, banking loans exceeding 100 million dollars from four Jordanian banks for the implementation of IT project for the Jordanian intelligence department.

Since November, 2001 Majd al-Shamaeylah stopped paying back the loans before he fled outside Jordan together with his brother.

The Australian authorities arrested Majd al-Shamaeylah in June as he entered the country "illegally" by a forged passport. The Jordanian government still exerts efforts to get him from Australia which is not linked with Jordan in a treaty to exchange handing over those wanted by the justice.
