King Mohammed at World Summit urge canceling debt, not wasting resources
Morocco-Regional, Economics, 9/3/2002
The speech delivered Monday by Morocco's King Mohammed VI before the World Summit for Sustainable Development is a plea from the conscience to implement the decisions made in Rio, through the mobilization of the necessary financial resources and technologies, said the official spokesman for the Royal palace, Hassan Aourid, in a statement to reporters in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Royal speech is equally a plea from the heart in favor of the African continent which is plagued by marginalization, poverty and epidemics, said the spokesman who recalled the sovereign's decision to cancel the debts of least developed African countries and to open the Moroccan market to these countries' products.
In a solidarity move, King Mohammed VI had announced on the occasion of the Africa-Europe summit held in Cairo in 2000 Morocco's decision to cancel the debts of least developed African countries and to open its market to the products of these countries.
The spokesman stated further that the duty of solidarity, as it was outlined by the king in his speech at the opening session of the meeting of Heads of State and Government at the World Summit for Sustainable Development does not exempt the countries of the south in general and African countries in particular from self-examination and from making the best possible use of their riches and resources instead of wasting them in artificial conflicts.
The sovereign who called for the adoption of a comprehensive strategy, based on true partnership, genuine solidarity and an efficient close proximity approach to achieve sustainable development, urged the countries in the south to work for optimal utilization of their human and natural resources, to abide by principles of good governance and to devote their potentialities to achieving sustainable development.
"These potentialities must be devoted to achieving sustainable development, instead of being wasted on artificial disputes," the sovereign said.
