Nomination for Bahrain parliamentary elections, three women take part
Bahrain, Politics, 9/2/2002

Three Bahraini women announced their nomination for launching the parliamentary elections due to be held in October. The first election in the kingdom since 1975, according to the Bahraini daily al-Ayam ( days ) on Sunday.

The paper said that Ghanya Rajab decided to nominate herself for the parliamentary elections for the first "circle" (election area) in the northern province making her the third woman seeking parliamentary office in the elections following Faeyza al-Zabbani and Ismat al-Musawi. There is a total of 53 candidates for these elections.

The paper quoted Rajab, a woman activist and a member in the Bahraini woman's union saying that nominating herself for the parliamentary elections comes in "consolidation of the role played by the woman in the society and in the process of building up and democracy" taking place in Bahrain. She said that her election program will include in its priorities improving woman's condition and the role of the woman, and approving the civil status law as well as adopting a law implying tough sanctions on crimes against children.

The parliamentary elections executive director Sheikh Ahmad Bin Ateyah Allah al-Khaleifa said on Sunday that the door for nomination will be opened officially on September 14 and that all those who announced their desire to be nominated had done so in advertisements in newspapers and the mass media.

Sheikh Ahmad said that number of voters who are registered in the elections lists reached 635,243 distributed on 40 circles in the five provinces in Bahrain.

It is expected, however, that the voters will head for the voting ballots on October 24 to choose 40 candidates for the parliament, the first chamber for the parliament, in addition to 40 members appointed by the King in the Shoura council.
