Fate of al-Turabi, as weapons, documents are found with Sudan's People Congress party
Sudan, Politics, 8/31/2002

News reports have been contradictory concerning the fate of the opposition leader of the People's Congress Party Hassan al-Turabi.

Well-informed sources said that he was taken from the under home arrest government residence, where he had lived under continued detention for one year to Copper prison, while police sources denied these news and said he was still at the house and was not transported to the prison.

On the other hand, the Sudanese security police confiscated large amounts of weapons, ammunition, explosives, documents and Computers discs that included information unveiling new dimensions of the destructive plan by members of the People's Congress Party led by Hassan al-Turabi.

Sudanese security sources said that the information covered targets to be blown off. These include the house of the minister of energy Awad al-Jas. In this regard several persons who tried to bombard the house and other houses of the ruling party leaderships were arrested.

The sources said that the weapons which were found in various areas of the capital, some of which were buried underground, include Klashinkov (AK 47), pistols, Molotove bombs, and Nitrat Potassium which is used in making locally made mortar bombs.

Other members of the People's Congress Party were arrested, while the security forces continue their monitoring and follow up of the members who are targeted, according to the plan -- to carry out certain destruction operations with the aim of undermining the ruling regime and obstructing the peace process underway in Mashakos, Kenya.
