Religion is the most sensitive issue in Sudan
Sudan, Politics, 8/28/2002

The Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir stressed on Tuesday that the initial peace agreement between the Sudanese government and the southern rebels guarantees the role of the Islamic Sharia in the country.

Meantime, analysts stressed that religion remains the most sensitive issue which provokes split in Sudan whether the country is at peace or war.

In statements issued on Tuesday by the Sudanese daily al-Anbaa, al-Bashir said "we will not forgo the Sharia," adding that the US realizes there is no way to force the Sudanese government to give up the Sharia.

Islamists in Sudan show they are concerned that the framework agreement which was signed between Khartoum and the rebels of the Sudan' People's Liveration Army ( who are not Muslims ) will exclude the south from implementing the Islamic Sharia and gives the south the right to split from Sudan.
