Johannesburg World Summit: Arab League to Present Document on Sustainable Development in Arab Countries
Regional, Environment, 8/27/2002
The Arab League will present a document on sustainable development in Arab countries to the world Summit of Johannesburg held August 26-September 04.
The document voices the Arab states' commitment to enact the action plan adopted in Rio Earth Summit in 1992, and to boost their participation in the efforts for sustainable development.
The League exposed projects achieved in the Arab region since the Rio Summit in fields of education and living standards improvement despite the obstacles facing Arab countries such as threats against peace and security, occupation of Arab territories, high poverty and illiteracy rates, growing population, heavy indebtedness, farming lands shrinking and research deficit.
The Pan-Arab organization underlines the necessity of creating suitable conditions for regional development and peace and security, putting an end to occupation, protecting the environment and natural resources and developing the economic and social infrastructure.
The document was adopted in Cairo end of July at a meeting of Arab experts. It will be presented to the summit by head of the environment and sustainable development department at the Arab League, Fatima Al-Mallah.
