Trade exchange between Syria, Iraq

The Iraqi minister of commerce Muhammad Mahdi Saleh has announced that the total volume of trade exchange between Syria and Iraq in the framework of the UN imposed "oil for food" program and the free trade agreement signed between the two states exceed has exceeded 4 billion dollars since 1997.
The Iraqi daily al-Joumhoreyah ( the Republic) on Sunday quoted Saleh as saying that this figure will be increased when the sanctions imposed on Iraq will are lifted. He added that Iraq is working to give priority to the Arab states in trade dealings.
Saleh indicated that he has discussed with the Syrian minister of industry Issam al- Zaem during his visit to Damascus in the mid of last week joint projects that had been agreed to be studied and to finalize an agreement to determine the sites of these agreements. He explained that part of these projects will be ready for approval during the visit to be carried out by the Iraqi Vice- President Taha Yassin Ramadan to Damascus to attend the meetings of the Syrian- Iraqi joint higher committee due to be held on August 28th.
