Moroccan Human Rights Organization Condemns Barbarous Acts by Extremist Groups
Morocco, Local, 8/24/2002
The Moroccan Human Rights Organization (OMDH) has voiced "indignation and total condemnation of the barbarous acts" perpetrated by extremist groups against citizens. "The Moroccan Human Rights Organization voices its indignation and total condemnation of the barbarous acts that it deems a blatant breach to fundamental human rights, such as the right to life, physical security, individual freedom, right to creed and right to peaceful, stable life," said a communiqut issued Friday.
Moroccan security services dismantled early August in Casablanca a criminal gang, whose members belong to a criminal web named "Salafia Jihadia," and who committed several criminal acts, including premeditated murders, detention of fire arms and ammunitions, kidnapping and sequestration. The arrested persons avowed the assassination or death of six persons. Expressing solidarity with the victims and stressing the need to foil such acts, the OMDH said these acts must be of concern "to all sides: public authorities, political parties, civil society components, media and intellectuals. Likewise, they must be of concern to all trends of political Islam."
The OMDH which hailed the media for their seriousness in covering these events called public authorities to regularly inform the public opinion on the outcome of investigations conducted, insisting that information is a fundamental component for citizens' mobilization to foil such aggressions and effectively secure the citizens' security. The organization called the whole of the human rights movement "to initiate a joint action to foil this new kind of barbarous acts and to defend the human principles and gains whose consecration is the result of a long, arduous militancy." The Communique stated further that in light of international conventions and of human dignity principles as they are consecrated by Islam, given its responsibilities and its goals that place security, peace and the rule of the law among its top priorities, and taking into account its former stands condemning violence and terrorism under all their forms, the OMDH decided to closely follow this phenomenon and entrusted an investigation team with supervising the situation on the field.
