Amir of Qatar discuss with Mubara Arab conditions; FM heads to Iraq
Qatar-Regional, Politics, 8/24/2002

Amir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa al-Thani on Friday made a telephone call with President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt. Talks during the telephone conversations, dealt with the developments of the international position and latest regional developments and exchanging view points concerning current contacts at the Arab and international levels concerning the Palestinian question and the Iraqi crisis.

The Qatari news agency, on the other hand, said that the Qatari foreign minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jasem Bin Jaber al-Thani will pay a visit to Baghdad, Iraq, on Monday.

Well-informed Qatari sources said that the Qatari foreign minister's talks will basically deal with the possibility of the return back of the UN weapons inspectors to Iraq as a means to defuse the current crisis and to prevent a likely attack against Iraq.

The sources added that the Qatari foreign minister will hold consultations with the Iraqi leaders to discuss latest developments of conditions in Iraq in light of the escalation of the American threats to direct a military strike against Iraq aiming at toppling the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. Just three years ago the Qatari foreign minister paid a visit to Iraq in a mediation attempt between Iraq and the UN in an attempt to solve the pending issues between the two sides. By the beginning of this year, the Qatari foreign minister showed his good offices to open a direct dialogue between Iraq and the Gulf states to settle issues remained since the second Gulf war and to achieve reconciliation between Baghdad and the Gulf states. But these good offices were rejected by Kuwait.

Worthy mentioning that Qatar was among the first of the Gulf states to resume relations with Iraq following the Gulf war in 1991. It has good relations with Baghdad and in June this year Qatar signed a free trade agreement with Baghdad.
