Al-Bashir optimistic over results of Mashakos agreement
Sudan, Politics, 8/24/2002
The Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir said that the regional and international forces are standing behind Mashakos agreement recently signed between his government and the rebels of southern Sudan. He expressed his optimism that this agreement will be conducive to establishing peace in the country.
In a statement to the Egyptian magazine al-Mousawer issued on Friday, al-Bashir said the war between the north and the south lasted for 19 years and the two sides did not achieve any victory. He indicated the failure of all former Sudanese regimes in imposing unity by means of forces. He added that the war has become stronger and more fierce and has blundered the resources and human potentials and under all these elements "we had only before us but to accept the right of self- determination. Unity is either to be voluntarily between the north and the south or cessation is to be made amicable."
The Sudanese president stressed that he is pleased one hundred percent that southern Sudan will choose unity. He called on the African states especially the neighborly stated and the greater international forces to provide necessary aid to the Sudanese people to support their unity.
