Main points of Sudan's Mashakos peace agreement

The main points of Mashakos agreement are: The two sides, the Sudanese government and John Garang led rebel movement are to abide by commitment to solve the Sudanese question. The two sides work with the international monitory committee during the provisional period in order to strengthen arrangements stated by the agreement in order to make the unity of Sudan, later an optimum right and a wish for all.

By the end of the 6 years of the provisional period, and under an international supervision, the two sides run a referendum for the people of southern Sudan to choose between a united Sudan or to be separated.

There will be a period of 6 months following the signing of the agreement and before the beginning of the provisional period during which the society will be prepared for the peace process and introducing the spirit of amity among its people as well as founding the establishments and mechanisms stated in by the agreement.

Founding a mechanism to implement and follow up the peace agreement.

Preparation for a comprehensive cease fire.

The provisional period starts after the end of the aforesaid six months directly. All establishments and mechanisms formed with the period of the 6 months will continue performing its tasks.

There will be a national government at the agreement of the two sides, taking into account the cultural and religious diversity of the Sudanese people.

In all parts of Sudan, except the southern provinces the rule will be according to the Islamic Sharia, and unanimity.

Inside the southern provinces the legislation is based on the values of religions and traditions valid in the south.

The agreement's pivotal points are the unity of Sudan which is based on the democracy of the rule, justice and equity and honoring all rights of the people of Sudan to be the top priority in the two sides talks.

The people of southern Sudan have the right to rule their provinces, the same right they have also to take part in the national government of all Sudan.

The people of southern Sudan have the right through a general referendum to self- determination, religion, and traditions that are a source of great might for the Sudanese people.
