Sanaa apologizes for buying missiles parts from North Korea
Yemen-USA, Politics, 8/24/2002
The US Department of State has announced imposition of sanctions at a northern Korean company for selling Yemen components for the "Skud" missiles. This was before the US President George Bush came to power. Sanaa presented an "apology" over finalizing this deal.
The New York Times on Thursday indicated the imposition of sanctions on the said Korean company. Yemen will not be exposed to any sanctions in the context of this case. The official at the US Department of State said in a statement to the American "The Free world" radio that the US administration raised this issue with Yemen.
Another American official said that Washington asked Sanaa on the reason behind buying the components of the missiles and that the Yemeni officials "apologized" and vowed not to repeat the deal and to show cooperation with the US in other fields.
Earlier the North Korean "Changwang Seniong" company was exposed to sanctions but the sanctions will be this time on the government of North Korea.
Licenses and contracts relating to advanced technological items are banned. The company is considered the marketing arm for the North Korean missile program.
