Two inmates died, twenty were injured in fire
Morocco, Local, 8/20/2002
A fire broke Friday at dawn at the prison of Souk Larba, some 100 km northeast of Rabat, killing two inmates and injuring more than twenty.
Following the fire, King Mohammed VI gave instructions to the managing board of the Mohammed VI Foundation for the Reintegration of Inmates to extend assistance to the victims and to their families, a statement by the foundation said.
Managers of the Foundation, Ms Zoulikha Nasri, Najat Mjid and Assia el Ouadie visited the victims' families to extend them the condolences of King Mohammed VI and of the members of the Foundation managing board and handed them a financial donation to help them cope with the painful circumstances.
They also visited the Souk Larbaa hospital where 14 of the injured persons are being treated and visited the jail to get informed on the accommodation conditions of the inmates who were not affected by the fire and on the measures made by the jail administration to avoid such incidents.
The Three Foundation managers later on visited 12 victims hospitalized at the Mohammed V hospital in Casablanca.
In view of the serious condition of these victims, the Foundation put at the disposal of the medical team a first batch of drugs worth 300,000 Dirhams (about US$ 30,000), the statement said.
Immediately after the fire broke, minister of justice, Omar Azziman, went on the spot to supervise the rescue operation and condole the victims' families.
