Saddam Hussein nominated for a new term of office in retaliation to the American threats
Iraq, Politics, 8/20/2002

"Saddam Hussein's historical leadership of Iraq will be always a bulwark against the enemies and the march of the Iraqis will continue until they will be victorious and the sanctions are over. The ratification of the Iraqi national council to this nomination expresses the deep democracy. It is a direct answer to all attempts aiming at undermining the will of the Iraqis and their independent options."

By these words the chairman of the Iraqi national council ( the parliament) Sadoun Hammadi summarized the results of the special session held by the council on Monday ( to adopt) the decision of the Iraqi revolution leadership council on re- nominating the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein for a seven- year new term of office, and the Iraqis to head for the balloting centers in the mid of October.

Hammadi addressed, in a speech in which he opened the session, the 250 members of the council saying: " this historical session reflects the commitment of the people to the leadership of President Saddam Hussein and to renew his post of office as a leader for Iraq under the circumstances the country is facing.

After this speech,, the voting was made and all the 250 members raised their hands. After the session a cable was sent to Hussein saying:" re-nomination of your excellency to the post of the President is a proof on the commitment of your people to your wise policy and the referendum day will be a confirmation on strengthening our march towards dignity under your leadership." This will be the second time in which the Iraqis are invited to " choose " their President within 23 years, the date when the Iraqi President assume power in Iraq in 1979. It is the first time also since Iraq has been converted to the Republican system in 1958, when in 1995 Hussein got the " consensus " of the Iraqi people at 96,99% in the votes of more than 8 million voters in the referendum which was then 47,99%.
