Saleh in Saudi Arabia: No justification for US attack on Iraq
Yemen-Saudi Arabia, Politics, 8/19/2002

The Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh announced in Saudi Arabia on Sunday that directing an ( American ) attack against Iraq "is not justified."

He stressed that such a step will "have grave reflections on the security and stability of the region." Saleh said upon his arrival in Jeddah in a visit to Saudi Arabia that lasted for hours during which he met with Saudi Arabia Crown Prince Abdullah Ibn Abdul Aziz that Yemen "is committed to the Arab position which rejects this strike, because it is not justified after Iraq has shown its readiness to start negotiations concerning the inspection committee."

He stressed that at the meantime, the Arab nation is facing grave challenges that need coordination of stances and unification of visions so as to maintain solidarity and withstand "attempts aiming at dismembering the Arab line." He announced prior to his meeting with the Saudi crown prince "I will discuss with the Saudi crown prince all issues of concern to the relations between our two countries and of interests to al-Jazira ( Arab peninsula and the Gulf area) and consultation and exchanging of views concerning current developments on the regional, Arab and international arenas, foremost being the acts of repression against the Palestinians by the Israeli occupation forces and the threats imposed on the Iraqi people to direct a military strike against Iraq and to topple its regime."

Saleh commended the Saudi- Yemeni relations. He expressed his satisfaction over the development of these relations in all areas. He said "we are pleased over the relations between Yemen and the Kingdom especially following the signing of Jeddah historical treaty which set a solid base of the bilateral relations towards wide horizons." The last visit made by the Yemeni President to Saudi Arabia was in December 2001.

The Saudi crown prince and President Saleh discussed the developments in the Middle East region "especially the Palestinian question."

The Saudi news agency said the two leaders discussed the Palestinian question and the efforts "made to reach just solutions to the conflict in the region."
