Calls for international action in favor of Moroccans jailed in Algeria
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 8/17/2002
A group of Moroccan NGOs, attending in Geneva the meetings of the United Nations Human Rights sub-commission, on Friday renewed calls for an urgent international action to put an end to the ordeal of Moroccan nationals, sequestered in the Algerian south-western camps of Tindouf.
All international NGOs and organizations have a duty to concretely and urgently act to put an end to one of the worst cases of human rights violations in the world, the group said in a release circulated Friday in Geneva at the end of the 54th session of the U.N. sub-commission.
"The United Nations, the countries (of the world) and international NGOs have grown aware of the seriousness of this humanitarian tragedy that a hostage population has been enduring for 27 years," the NGOs said.
All faithful human rights activists should grant more attention to the situation prevailing in the camps of Tindouf, the group said, underlining that the people sequestered in these camps have equal rights as other fellow human beings around the world.
The sequestration of these people is a criminal act perpetrated by a junta in total despise of all human values, the group lamented, noting that such a criminal act is confirmed by the Polisario separatists' systematic rejection of any proposal likely to shelve the Sahara issue and hence end the ordeal of the sequestered Moroccans.
