Al-Sharq al-Awsat: Jordanian lawyers to defend those accused in smuggling weapons to Palestinians
Jordan-Palestine, Politics, 8/17/2002

The Jordanian bar association has decided to form a defendant commission to defend 10 Jordanians detained after the Jordanian authorities had arrested them for having weapons they planned to smuggle to the Palestinian territories to enable the Palestinians to escalate their resistance against Israel.

The London- based al-Sharq al-Awsat quoted the chairman of the Jordanian bar Association Saleh al-Armouti as saying that the association is waiting for the accusation list to be issue against those detainees by the attorney general of the state's security court in order to declare the defendant commission which will defend them.

Al- Armouti said that a Jordanian woman came to him to defend her husband and son who are detained by the Jordanian authorities as they were arrested trying to smuggle weapons to the Palestinian territories. Al-Armouti indicated that he had learnt from the attorney general of the state security court on the fate of the two men and found out that other 10 persons are held because of having weapons and plans to smuggle them into the Palestinian territories.

Al-Armouti said the attorney general will give him the names of the detainees after issuing the list of accusation against them, and following this, the names of the defense committee team members will be declared.
