King Abdullah: Jordan will not talk on behalf Palestinians
Jordan-Palestine, Politics, 8/16/2002
The Jordanian King Abdullah II has stressed his country's stand in supporting the Palestinian people in all international forums and circles so as to restore back their lands and establish their independent state with Jerusalem as a capital.
In a speech he addressed on Thursday to the Jordanians, the Jordanian Monarch said "our efforts were centered on contacting effective countries in the world, especially the USA, Russia, the European Union and China, and the use of all our relations with them, in order to halt this Israeli attack and urging Israel to abide by what it had agreed upon with our Palestinian brothers and to return back to the table of negotiations."
The King added "we have stressed to these countries that the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories is the main reason for the conflict in the region and that peace can be only achieved through the return back of the occupied Arab territories to their owners on the ground of the international legitimacy resolutions and the establishment of the independent Palestinian state on the Palestinian soil." He stressed that a set time should be set for the foundation of the Palestinian state.
The king added "talking about the 'Jordanian option' as categorically rejected. Jordan will not be in any way an alternative for the Palestinian leadership, and Jordan will not be a side in settling the Palestinian cause, or taking on behalf of the Palestinian people."
The Jordanian king rejected the voices which call for abrogating the Jordanian- Israeli treaty or closing the Israeli embassy and expelling the Israeli ambassador. He said that this treaty constitutes a real guarantee for protecting the rights, interests and borders of the kingdom.
The Jordanian king called for settling the Iraqi issue through dialogue with the UN instead of threatening to use force, stressing the need to put an end to the sufferings of Iraq and honoring its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
