AL, Egypt underline importance of preserving Sudan's unity
Sudan-Egypt, Politics, 8/16/2002

The Secretary General of the Arab League (AL) Amr Moussa has stressed the need of taking effective measures in order to ensure Sudan's unity and territorial integrity through revitalizing the AL's Sudan reconstruction fund and mobilizing Arab efforts in support of Sudan's unity.

In statements followed long talks he had held with the American envoy on Sudan John Danforth in Cairo on Wednesday, the AL chief stressed the need that all the Arab states will work promptly to organize elements of the Sudanese unity.

The Arab League chief also indicated during his meeting with the American envoy a genuine will by the American side to maintain Sudan's unity and avoid separation, noting that the American envoy stressed his country's readiness to support efforts to Sudan's rebuilding.

On Wednesday, the Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Maher discussed with the American envoy on Sudan the latest developments on the Sudanese arena and current talks in Kenya between the Sudanese government and the rebels.

Following the meeting, Maher stressed the need of collective efforts in order to help the Sudanese people preserve their unity and territorial integrity, noting that there is an identical view with the US on the need to continue efforts to achieve this objective. Maher added he had agreed with the American envoy to continue the Egyptian- American contacts to help the Sudanese build their country and achieving prosperity.
