King Fahd health conditions might worsen, diplomats say
Saudi Arabia, Local, 8/14/2002

Diplomats and a Saudi opposition group abroad said on Tuesday that the health of the Saudi Arabia's King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz might get worse despite his recovery from an eye- surgery, he recently underwent.

The eye- surgery operation which was carried out on King Fahd in one of Geneva's hospitals in July has increased the speculation on the health of the King (79 year old) and who is diabetic.

Following the surgery, Saudi officials said that the king was recovering.

However, certain diplomats in the Gulf area and also sources in Saudi Arabia said that the health condition of the king raised controversy inside the royal family on his succession. A diplomat who requested to be anonymous said "his condition ( the King ) is not very bad but not stable as used to be in the past." The Saudi opposition "al-Harakah al-Islameyah Le al-Islah" (the Islamic movement for reforms) said that King Fahd's mental and thinking conditions is not like it used to be, to the extent that he could not realize some of his children.
