Jordanian opposition reject military maneuvers with the Americans
Jordan-USA, Military, 8/14/2002
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Jordanian opposition parties called for abrogating the joint military maneuvers between the Jordanian and American forces which started on Monday in al-Aqaba to the south of the kingdom, considering these maneuvers as "unacceptable" under the American threats to attack Iraq and the talk on the Jordanian role as a starting point for the military operations.
In its statement, the higher coordination committee of the Jordanian opposition parties, representatives for 14 parties including Islamic forces, said that the government "was persistent in proceeding forward with the maneuvers despite the demands made by the political parties and the Jordanian people to cancel them." The committee indicated that this decision "is in contradiction with the declared official position pronounced by King Abdullah in refusing the aggression against Iraq."
On Monday, the Jordanian government announced that these maneuvers "have no links to any likely American attack against Iraq" and that they were planned more than one year ago. The Jordanian minister of information Muhammad al-Edwan said that the American forces will leave the kingdom as soon as these maneuvers end.
