Passport requirement removed for travel between Amman, Damascus
Jordan-Syria, Politics, 8/8/2002

The Jordanian minister of tourism Taleb al-Refae announced that Amman and Damascus are now studying measures to be taken for travel between the two capitals by the use ID, not passports, noting that this decision was taken in 2001 but was postponed to be enforced because of the security condition the region is passing.

The Jordanian minister said that the Lebanese government approved to give Visas for his country's citizens at the border, in line of the reciprocated treatment, and that this measure will be implemented immediately following official arrangements between the two states.

The Jordanian minister of tourism said that the "same tourism district" which includes Jordan, Syria and Lebanon is considered an integrated tourism area in that the tourism product of every state compliments the other and that this "district" may help to increasing the volume and share of Arab and international tourism turnout to the three states.

Jordan had stopped its tourism agreement with Israel since the beginning of the Palestinian Intifada. The tourism agreement between Jordan and Israel stated that Tel Aviv will promote Jordan's historic site of Petra in its tourism programs. Today the official heads to Damascus and Beirut.
