Yemen, Local, 8/8/2002

A team from Amnesty International is expected to arrive in Yemen by the end of September, in a mission aiming at investigating conditions and status of detainees held by the security departments whose cases are part of the framework of the Yemeni- American cooperation to fighting terrorism following September 11 incidents.

Khaled al-Anasi, the rapparatuer of the national committee for defense of rights and freedoms in Yemen indicated that there are 138 Yemeni detainees in the security jails with many of them held over criminal cases which were sentenced before the incidents of September 11 and the explosion of USS Cole warship off the coasts of Aden in October 2000.N
