Iraq abstains from celebrating Kuwait invasion anniversary

Iraq has abstained from celebrating the anniversary of its invasion of Kuwait, in remarks to its desire to open a new page with its "southern neighbor," at a time when the American threats have been escalated to topple the ruling regime in Baghdad, while the Arab states have called for taking practical measures to withstand these threats.

On the other hand, the former coordinator of the UN humanitarian program in Iraq,Hans von Sponeck, on Thursday considered that an American attack on this Iraq" is "deliberately unjustified."

In an interview with the Austrian public radio, Sponeck said a "preventive attack ( against Iraq) is a violation to the international law and I do not think Washington will get an authorization from the UN Security Council."

Sponeck who quit his post in 2000 in protest of the international sanctions imposed on Iraq, said that Baghdad should be assured that the weapons inspectors will not be used once again as spies. He explained "it will be no more a secret that the UN weapons inspectors who are supposed to be neutral, were used by the American and British intelligence systems."
