Sorour: July Revolution realized democracy, freed national will

Speaking Tuesday at a forum organized by Cairo University as part of celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the July revolution, People's Assembly Speaker Ahmed Fathi Sorour said the July revolution gave the rule to the people and Gamal Abdul Nasser affirmed his commitment to democracy which is the rule of the people in the interest of the people.
Speaking at the meeting, Shura Council speaker Moustafa Kamal Hilmy said the July 1952 revolution, led by Gamal Abdul Nasser, was a political, economic, social and cultural revolution which had its impact at the Arab, African and international levels.
He said that the first stage, led by President Nasser, ended the monarchy, declared the republic and adopted the socialist system.
The second stage, led by President Anwar Al-Sadat, declared the constitution and introduced the multiparty system and stressed democracy and the freedom of the press. The greatest achievement was the victory of October 1973.
The third stage, led by President Mubarak, witnessed great changes in the political, economic and social life "in continuation and affirmation of the principles of the July revolution'.
