1000 Sudanese killed in clashes between the army, the rebels
Sudan, Politics, 7/31/2002

A high ranking official at the Sudanese rebel movement said on Tuesday that almost 1000 persons were killed and other 10 thousands were displaced in an attack carried out by the Sudanese government forces and their armed groups in an oil rich area in southern Sudan.

This, despite the signing of the Nairobi agreement which paves for ceasing fire between the two sides.

On the other hand, the Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Maher refused to comment on the agreement signed between the Sudanese government and the rebels due to the fact that full information is not available. Maher stressed the importance of the Sudanese territorial integrity. Maher said that his country received some information from Kenyan sources and also American and little information from Sudanese sources.
