Iraqi opposition leader visits Turkey, meets US officials
Iraq-USA, Politics, 7/30/2002
The Turkish daily Zamaan said Monday that the chairman of the Iraqi opposition National Congress Party Ahmad Jalabi visited Ankara on July 17 during the visit held by the US Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz to Turkey, noting that no publicity was made on the talks he had held nor the persons he had met with.
The paper indicated that the US administration's confidence had decreased in al-Jalabi, because he is close to Iran and to a representative for the Shiite wing, and because of theft of money within the forces that joined the Iraqi opposition conference, despite the American support for the conference in 1998. The US had withheld funds from Iraqi opposition due to what it said was "financial management practices."
The paper quoted sources at the Turkish foreign ministry saying that Jalabi has lost his popularity in the American circles, and also at the international level, and that Ankara may refuse to discuss his name after the change of the Iraqi regime.
