Al-Assad confers with US team; for stronger ties with Lebanon
Syria-USA, Politics, 7/29/2002
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad Saturday in Damascus received a delegation representing the American Action Group for Lebanon led by former US ambassador Edward Gabriel. Members of the visiting delegation presented the president with their mission.
Talks dealt with the implications of September 11 attacks in the USA and their repercussions on the world.
The president reiterated "Syria's keenness to strengthen the strong and historic ties with sisterly Lebanon" and the importance for the visiting American team to take steps in strengthening understanding of the cultural aspects of the history of the region's people and in consolidating relations of cooperation among different parties.
Al-Assad said solidifying such human relations narrow distances among peoples, and that such an objective has been Syria's main preoccupation.
Members of the American delegation expressed appreciation to President al-Assad's analysis of the current situation in the Middle East and commended the depth of that analysis.
