British, Turkish land, sea attack against Iraq
Iraq, Politics, 7/29/2002
The British Sunday Times daily said yesterday that the British military leaders are preparing to launch a land and sea attack against Iraq with the participation of naval ships and thousands of British and American troopers.
The paper said the British- American attack might be launched from the Arab Gulf area and might start, according to American officials in October this year.
The officials added that one of the military plans states that a force of 50,000 will be prepared to be deployed within days or to seek the help of Iraqi separatists, backed by a force of 5,000 troopers. The officials added that there is a long-term plan implying deploying a large force of soldiers and heavy weapons.
On the other hand, well-informed western diplomatic sources disclosed to the London- based al-Sharq al-Awsat details of an emergency Turkish plan of 8 items to withstand likely developments when the attacks start against Iraq.
According to the said sources the plan is summed up in preventing the Iraqi civilians, especially the Kurds, from crossing the border to Turkey, preventing the foundation of a Kurdish state in northern Iraq, and attacking what is left of the members of the Kurdistani workers party.
The plan also aims at preventing the formation of a military political alliance in northern Iraq, similar to the "Afghani northern alliance," and to work for maintaining Iraq's unity, preventing a Turkish role in this matter, seeking to control the Kurdistani democratic party of the "al-Barazani wing", the Kurdistani national federation "al-Talibani wing," and defending rights of the "Turkmans," and preventing the Kurds from having control on al-Mousel and Karkouk cities.
