Al-Rai al-Am: Al-Sharif Bin Ali and Iraq's future
Iraq, Politics, 7/29/2002
Al-Sharif Bin Ali Bin al-Hussein, who is an the Iraqi opposition and advocates the return of monarchy to Iraq, said that an international, regional and national workshop is working for the future of Iraq, whose people have suffered wars and has become ailing of the policies and practices of "the current Iraqi regime."
In a statement to the Kuwaiti daily al-Rai al-Am issued on Sunday, Ali Bin al-Hussein expected a military act in order to topple the regime of the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein during the six coming months. He added this operation might be delayed until February 2003, stressing that there is controversy in the US on the size of military interference.
Al-Sharif ruled out the partition of Iraq following the American military operations, but he expected the occurrence of struggle over power afterwards.
On the role of the Iraqi opposition during the operations "to topple Saddam," al-Sharif said that the task of the opposition is to work for not converting the American forces into occupation forces, or keeping the political decisions in the hands of the Iraqi, and preventing the initiation of a political or administrative vacuum when the Iraqi regime is demolished.
Al-Sharif expressed his conviction that the US will ask Jordan, probably, to contribute into logistic operations, but the decision will stay in the hands of Jordan.
As for the ambitions of Jordan' Hassan Bin Talal to acquire the throne in Iraq to establish a Monarchy, al-Sharif stressed that Prince al- Hassan has no intention or desire to the Iraqi throne, and that he is desirous to help the Iraqi people and lift their sufferings, adding that the US has no plans to this end. Al-Sharif who is related to the ruling royal family in Jordan, escaped from Iraq's revolution of 1958 which downed the royal regime of his cousin, King Faisal, who was appointed by Britain as a ruler of Iraq in 1921.
