Algeria: clashes in Qabael area
Algeria, Politics, 7/27/2002

The Algerian police on Thursday interfered, using tear bombs, in order to prevent a demonstration called upon by Berber activists in Teizi Wzou, the largest of al-Qabael area.

The call for a strike was met with strong response by businessmen who closed their shops since early morning, and this resulted in freezing activities of the city, which has been witnessing acts of violence since more than one year.

Eye- witnesses said that the official riot fighting forces closed since early morning all routes and openings leading to the downtown, and also confronted masses of people coming from neighboring cities to take part in the demonstration which was due to start from Mouloud Ma'mari university and the "November 1st" playground which is close to the city's downtown.
