Mubarak accuses Sharon of 'bombing' the peace process
Egypt-France, Politics, 7/27/2002
Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak in conclusion of his visit to France strongly warned the Israeli leaders and accused them of trying to "bomb" the peace efforts when they ordered to launch the bloody raid against Gaza.
Meantime, the French President Jacque Chirac stressed "identical view points" with President Mubarak concerning most of the international efforts especially the situation in the Middle East. In a joint press conference with his French counterpart Jacque Chirac following a luncheon banquet at the Eleysee palace, Mubarak said the Israeli raid reveals that the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon "wants to bombard peace." He added "there were efforts made by the Palestinian leadership and Hamas ( the Islamic resistance movement) in order to reach a halt to acts of violence to be followed by reforms (in the Palestinian commissions) and an Israeli withdrawal" from the Palestinian territories.
The Egyptian president who left later for Spain indicated that Israel's Defense Minister Benyamin Ben Eliezer visited Egypt recently "and asked our help to contribute to halting acts of violence." Mubarak said "this did not please Sharon who found in the Gaza operation a means to bomb the peace initiatives." Chirac, who will be meeting with the Israeli foreign minister Shimon Peres, announced his acceptance "with great pleasure" to head on October 16 to Alexandria, Egypt, to attend the inauguration of its new library along side with President Mubarak. Chirac will visit Alexandria in his way to Beirut to attend the Franchophonic summit which will Beirut will host on October 18.
