Morocco amazed by Spanish officials' remarks
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 7/26/2002

Morocco on Thursday voiced "amazement at the shocking, surprising and inadmissible comparison made by the Spanish foreign minister between the bloody Israeli raid against civilians in Gaza and the dispatching of a handful of Moroccan security agents to the Moroccan uninhabited islet of Toura."

"Morocco is amazed by some Spanish officials' statements that are undeniably against the commitments made," Moroccan minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Mohamed Benaissa, said.

Benaissa recalled that during the meeting he held on Monday in Rabat with his Spanish peer, Ana Palacio, the two sides convened to "maintain a frank, sincere and constructive dialogue to improve relations between the two countries and settle their difference."

"This goes for the shocking, surprising and inadmissible comparison, made yesterday by the minister Ana Palacio and that was reported by several media sources, between the Israeli killer air raid against the Palestinian civilians of Gaza and the dispatching of a score of Moroccan security agents to the Moroccan uninhabited islet of Toura," said Benaissa.

"We leave it to the international community and especially to the Arab and Islamic public opinions to appraise accordingly such a comparison and especially its underlying significance," he said.

Some 17 Palestinian civilians, mostly children and women, were killed in a Monday Israeli blitz of a residential district in Gaza.
