UN committee: Syrians in Golan live in very bad besiege conditions

The executive secretary of ESCWA ( UN Economic and Social Commission for West Asia ) Mrs. Mervat Tallawy has stressed that the Syrian citizens in the occupied Golan live in very hard under conditions similar to those in the occupied West Bank and Gaza.

In a speech she delivered before the UN social and economic council in New York, circulated by the US media office in Beirut, Tallawy added that Israel has built some 33 settlements in the occupied Syrian Golan heights, inhabited by some 17,000 Israeli settlers.

She indicated that work opportunities for the Syrians in the Golan are very limited and that those who work among them are living in unfair work conditions.

Tallawy stressed that the living conditions of the Palestinian people in the Palestinian territories have worsened, and cannot be described, because of the aggressive Israeli practices and the Israeli forces' use of tanks and planes in bombarding the Palestinian cities and villages and killing Palestinian civilians.

She made it clear that because of the Israeli practices, the Palestinian losses ranged between October 2000 and 31 December 2001 between $ 3- 4 billion.
