Rabat meeting is first step to renew trust, Spain fm
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 7/24/2002

Spanish foreign minister, Ana Palacio, said Tuesday that her meeting Monday in Rabat with Moroccan peer, Mohamed Benaissa, was a first step towards the rebuilding of trust between Rabat and Madrid.

She conceded that this trust can be built neither by decree nor in half an hour time, Palacio told the press after a meeting with Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission.

The countries should continue "to talk," she said, adding this dialogue will be carried on next September in Madrid when Benaissa will visit Madrid, she said.

"I hope that we will be able to improve our official relations with Morocco," she said, adding that relations with Morocco are very important.

Palacio said she was "happy" not to derogate from a rule in Spain whereby Morocco is the first destination outside the European Union for the Spanish foreign minister after his appointment.
