Baghdad accepts return of UN inspectors within comprehensive settlement
Iraq-Belgium, Politics, 7/24/2002
Iraq's foreign minister Naji Sabri has stressed his country's commitment to basics of a comprehensive settlement to the Iraqi issue by the UN. He said that Iraq accepts the return back of UN inspectors within the framework of the UN program, and in line of a comprehensive settlement, implying the end of economic sanctions, discussing the issue of Iraq's security and the security of the region, as well as paying compensations for the Iraqi infrastructure destruction as a result of the American- British bombardment.
In statements to the press, Sabri said that Iraq is eager that the European Union will play a greater role to lift the sanctions, and to have more understanding for the Arab issues especially the Palestinian question.
He added that relations between the Arab and the European states have a need for the Europeans to take and keep an independent position "from the American hegemony" and to proceed on a separate path for understanding and cooperation with the Arab states.
Following his meeting in Brussels on Monday with the Belgium Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Louis Michel, the Iraqi minister stressed that the talks with the Belgium side dealt with bilateral relations and the issues pertinent to dialogue between Iraq and the UN and the content of the recent round of talks held in Vienna to this effect.
