Britain rejects attacking Iraq
Iraq-UK, Politics, 7/22/2002
The spokesman for the British government and chairman of the Arab and Islamic department at the British foreign office Gerard Russell has stressed that any decision to direct a military attack against Iraq should be based on international resolutions and that the US has to talk with its allies before taking such a decision.
In a statement to al-Sharq radio on Sunday, Russell said that Iraq can avoid this attack if it permits the return back of UN inspectors to it.
In a similar statement to the Lebanese daily al-Nahar issued on Sunday, Russell stressed that his country's position concerning terrorism is different from that of the US due to the British enacted norms and rules in protecting civilians rights.
Russell, on the other hand, denied any British intention to add the Lebanese Hizbullah party in the European list to what is called terrorism. He, in this regard, renewed his country's rejections to the Israeli violations of the Lebanese sovereignty.
Meanwhile, the British "Sunday Times" and "The Independent " dailies on Sunday called on the international community to prevent the occurrence of any American military attack against Iraq, stressing that this will implant seeds of disorder in the world.
The two papers stressed that working for preventing something horrible is better that dealing with consequences after it takes place, adding that the US may attack Iraq without its allies' support.
