Egypt, Local, 7/20/2002
A gathering of 150 Egyptian and foreign archaeologists and Egyptologists called for an emergency measures to protect sites in Luxor from erosion by rains, flooding and underground water.
Scientists warned that the Valley of the Kings on the Nile's west bank would be completely eroded during the next 50 to 100 years if not steps are taken to prevent seepage from underground water courses.
At a conference in London, Egyptologists proposed that replicas of the tombs of Ramses I, Ramses VI, Hor Moheb and Tutankhamoun in the Valley of the kings and the Valley of Queens in Luxor be made and put on display in an outdoor museum.
The museum would be the world's biggest exhibition of antiquities.
The proposal is intended to encourage private sector participation in plans to preserve the nation's ancient heritage.
Private companies have contributed 312 million for the establishment of an antiquities museum in 6 October City.
Ministry of Culture will supervise the museum project, which will involve the use of British expertise in architectural technology.
The museum would house 120,000 pieces dating back to the 4th millennium BC to the fall of the Roman Empire.
