Lahoud discusses with Clerides developments in the region

Lebanese President Emil Lahoud on Friday in Cyprus held talks with the Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides that dealt with conditions in the region in light of the grave escalation in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The Lebanese president expressed his concern towards the escalation resulted from the Israeli policy in the region. He warned that the atmosphere is inclined towards further escalation, stressing that the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions is the sole way to reach a solution in the region.

In the joint press conference with Clerides, Lahoud stressed the need of returning back to the table of negotiations according to international principles and resolutions issued by the UN Security Council provided for comprehensive withdrawal of Israel until June 4, 1967 border line, rejection of settling the Palestinians outside Palestine and the return back of the Palestinians to their territories.

He added he briefed the Cypriot president with the results of the recent Arab summit in Beirut in March, stressing the importance of the Arab initiative and the need of making use of it to return back to stability in the region.

Clerides, for his part, praised the reciprocated friendship between the two countries.
