US administration admits disagreements with Arab and European countries on Arafat's future
Palestine-USA, Politics, 7/18/2002
US President George Bush will meet tonight with the Foreign Ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan in the context of efforts which are aimed at reaching a peaceful settlement in the Middle East on the basis of establishing two Palestinian and Israeli states with both living within secure and recognized international borders.
Secretary of State Colin Powell will hold an initial meeting with the three ministers on a working lunch for coordinating stances.
Meantime, the United States has admitted the existence of disagreements with Arab and European states on the future of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.
A State Department official said it is apparent that we have tactical disagreements on the issue of dealing with President Arafat.
He said the United States, while insists on boycotting Arafat, will deal with some of his ministers for encouraging US plans for reforming Palestinian security services.
The State Department official said the CIA is expected to play a key role in these plans and can deal with those who get orders from Arafat such as the new Palestinian Interior Minister Abdel Razek Al-Yahya and the current chiefs of the Palestinian Security Services.
